Porto
Portuguese charm on the Douro
The city of bridges, azuljos and port wine lodges.
Historic cobbled streets, colourful façades, an Atlantic breeze and a glass of port at sunset – what more could you ask for?
Porto's Old Town: a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Porto is best explored on foot. From São Bento station, whose entrance hall is lined with some 20,000 artfully painted tiles, the route leads downhill through winding streets to the Ribeira district. Here, colourful houses, cafés and restaurants line the banks of the Douro. For the best view over the city, climb the Torre dos Clérigos or cross the upper deck of the iron Ponte Dom Luís I bridge. And book lovers should not miss Livraria Lello, one of the most beautiful bookshops in the world
Port wine, francesinha and the Atlantic
Across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia, long-established port wine lodges open their doors for tours and tastings. When it comes to food, there is no getting around the francesinha, Porto's hearty cult sandwich with melted cheese and a spicy sauce. For something sweet to finish: a warm pastel de nata.
Fancy the sea? Historic tram line 1 runs leisurely along the river all the way to Foz do Douro on the Atlantic coast. And if you have more time, take a trip to the Douro Valley with its spectacular terraced vineyards.
The Douro Valley: a region made for dreaming
Around two hours' drive east of Porto lies one of Europe's most impressive cultural landscapes. The Alto Douro wine region has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. Its steep, hand-built vineyard terraces follow the river in gentle curves. This is where the grapes for port wine are grown. Numerous quintas, traditional wine estates, welcome visitors for tastings. Travelling by train from São Bento station to Pinhão is particularly scenic: for long stretches, the line runs right along the riverbank. Alternatively, boat trips on the Douro offer a fresh perspective.
